Saban (nama beliau).

(4) Sayidina Ali, memang terkenal kekuatnya.

Maka terumuslah antidot Tangkat Ali iaitu Kacip Fatimah. Hebat orang Melayu. Saya belum pernah meneliti akan rumput (kenapa rumput?) Kacip Fatimah!

4/5/09 BELIAN...our loosing heritage

4/5/09 BELIAN...our loosing heritage

Belian tree, the iron wood of Sarawak (Borneo). I have travelled to most of SEA countries. Even to some temperate one. I can't find any timber species as hard and as long lasting as Belian. I can't get the botanical name, will do later, once I got hold of some forestry taxonomic book.

(2) In year end 1984, after my graduation, I followed MyUncle to look for durians and belian post in Nyelitak, Ulu Simunjan. Going up there we need to paddle through long, winding, and narrow fast running Batang Kiri. It take us about two days to reach Nyelitak from Simunjan town.

(3) I was more interested to take back the belian seeds and wanna try plant them at our alluvial MyGrand Pa coconut farm. I remembered, it took about a year then only the seeds begin to germinate. The growth was so slow, that lots of them were chopped off by MyUncle for mistaking them with the melastoma (senduduk). Only two trees survived, and had grown well in between the coconut (now oil palm).

(4) Today, I collected some of the seeds (each as big as our palm grip) from one of the tree, while the other one is just blooming (conspicuous florescence). I hope to sow the seeds and would plant them at some Public Places for our future generation to enjoy. I enjoy to see, MyLast 25 years effort proved to fruit, slowly, strongly, belian, a symbol of patience and determination, everything will do!

3/5/09 MATOA...great timber, valuable fruit....

3/5/09 MATOA...great timber, valuable fruit....

From the airport, driving through the long small winding road around Santani lake to the Jayapura City Center, Papua Indonesia, I noticed lots of this nice trees. MyBotanical instinct began to wonder what are these trees? They look so shading, strong, evergreen, with great bole. Are they planted?

One day in MyNatural botanical and sociological search, I met a lady selling busket of rounded, green and sometimes puple thumb size fruits. I asked what is it, and how to eat it. She shown me, the fruit has white flesh. Look like 'longan'. I take a few, and eat some. Taste sweet, soft, and just taste like 'longan'. How much per Kg? Rp20,000.00. I bought two kilos, eat most of it, and passed some to accompanying friends. I took about 20 seeds back home. That was in 2006.

(2) Today, I went back home to MyVillage, of the 20 seeds brought back, only five survived and growing well, the five trees are fruiting. Last year, they began to fruit, but I can't have the chance to look at it. As MyGrand Ma used to advice me, plant whatever fruit trees, but don't expect to harvest any, just do it for sadaqah! For human being, for animal. You get the fruits hereafter! Meanig, after three years, the tree, the Matoa is able to fruit. Consider among fast fruiting trees palnted on by way of the seed.

(3) In Papua, the tree is called Matoa. In Papua New Guinea (PNG), it is called Stone Tree. It is a timber tree. It could grow up to 20-30 meters high, giving big bole, and considered hard wood after merakak (in PNG).

(4) You can get the seedling at our Sunday Market. Here they called this plant as PNG Longan. I used to tell them to called it Matoa. one can buy the fruit, I think around this time of the year. Lots sell in Sarikei, I heard. That is the correct name. About 50-80 seedling are now nurse at our nursery and soon would be planted in Public Place for whole Sarawakian to enjoy. Hope they will appreciate it later.

2/5/09 JEWEL of the forest....

2/5/09 JEWEL of the forest....

Not many people know that orchid is called the Jewel of the Forest. That is the truth. In 1983-84, I did my Bsc Hon Thesis on Wild Orchid Ecology, with special reference on Limestone Ecology of Batu Cave and Bukit Takun, Templer Park, Selangor. My research is rather simple but 'dangerous' since I have to roam aroud both the Batu Cave and Bukit Takun, taking the natural temperature, humidity and light intesity at various time of the day where orchid are found. Other observations includes the growth medium, orchid species, their typical morphology, etc. I used to stay up there alone for few days (2-3 days) surviving on biscuits and available natural water. I managed to record about 38 species of wild orchids from these two places.

Climbing those limestone structure is not easy. At any moment the stone edge where one step or hold on could just crack, and if you are not well prepared, one would just flung down the cliff. I never gone through any cliff climbing training, but the challenges that I gone through make me remember Batu Cave and Bukit Takun well. I hope these two place, where I found lots of wild orchids still remain intact.

(2) As I graduated in 1984, and preferred to hold MyPhD (Penganggur terHormat Diraja) for some times, since I don't wanna be a scientist whom at that time seem to be 'over exploited species', I used to roam the Pendam Forest and once I found the smallest orchid I ever seen. I lost the species, and till today, if I go to any forest area, I would keep MyEyes open for the same plant.

(3) Today, I was very happy, MyLong awaited MyTiger or some called it Elephant orchid bloom profusely. I collected this orchid from Ulu Simunjan in 1984,a place called Nyelitak. It takes about two days, paddling through small winding Simunjan Kanan to reach the place (from Simunjan town). Today, due to the Oil Palm Plantation development to the area, it take only 10-20 minit drive from the Simunjan-Sri Aman Road.

(4) In Singapore, the Sultan of Johore used to transport his Tiger Orchid for show down there. He used to won special award for his bloom. I dream to beat him one day! I can't easily search for the botanical name of the orchid, but the petals do look like the tiger strips or leopard spots. The name is derived from such character. The leaves frond look like elephant trunk, such some people called the orchid as Elephant Orchid.

(5) The bloom can last till a month, and MyBloom is calculated with nine inflorences (nine long stalks).

(6) In fact last two years, I moved the Plant, which all this while was exposed too much to the sunlight, placed it on rocky ground, closed to a waterbodies (artificial waterfall and just by MyFish Pond, well shaded next to MyStore). It formed part of MyStore landscape, a real beautiful one. Love you god for sending me this Jewel of the Forest and now becoming the Jewel of MyStore!
